The State of Sky

The State of SkyTV

Crap, wanted to post this in November, but got sidetracked by editing deadlines and writing. And court has been batshit insane since like July, so Monday through Wednesday are utter brain dead days for me. The good news is I'm pretty sure I can now write judgment entries in my sleep, even if Legalese is still like a foreign language sometimes. LOL

So…my fave way to wind down is vegging out with television. Oddly, I'm not watching as much as I used to, or maybe it's more like I'm not watching as many shows as I used to. I only have about six appointment shows at the moment, which is almost unheard of for me. I don't know, I'm so fried when I get home that I have to really, really want to engage with the show or not bother. L

Anyway…behind the cut I go to discuss what I am watching…

Let's start with Sunday and The Walking Dead. Man, am I glad this season is moving faster than last. I literally walked away for the last, hell, I don't even know, four or five eps of S2 because I just did NOT give a hang about seeing what happened next. Don't think or feel like I really missed much either.

But this season? Wow…what a difference. And it's kind of fun because my middle kidlet is into the show and we've been discussing the eps after they air. He totally agreed the creeptastic scene where the Governor sat in the room with the fish tanks full of zombie heads made for heave-worthy viewing. He's decided the guy has more than a few screws loose. LOL I couldn't find a reason to argue with his logic. :D

Looking forward to this week's episode. I know what I want Daryl to do when he finally meets up with his brother, but who know if the TV gods will grant my wish. LOL

Monday…

Castle:

Ahhh…I got a little frustrated last season but I'm really enjoying it again. It's kind of fun watching Castle and Beckett pick their way through the minefield of working together while sleeping together and attempting to have a relationship. One of my favorite things about Castle and Beckett is (and always has been) how Rick completely embraces being a geeky pop culture addict and Beckett is totally closeted and tries to keep her fandom life under wraps…but it always seems to rear its nerdy head right AFTER Rick makes a blanket or snarky retort about something. I don't know, I love the contrast but also how it shows they actually have a lot in common. :D

Moving on to Tuesday…

Sons of Anarchy:

You know, this show owns me. And Sutter is never afraid to go where I never think he will. He completely crosses lines and tears people down, peeling back their layers to show the raw, bloody pulp underneath. And I kind of love how he's really not afraid to let everybody be ugly. Seriously, it's like watching a nightmare come to life where everyone's baggage is fair game and WILL be used against them…and none of the names are changed to protect anybody.

I don't know, it's fascinating to watch it all unfold, warts and all. And I really love the fact that there is no straight up hero or villain. They ALL have moments of selflessness and they've ALL committed acts of sheer brutality. It's never just black and white, good or bad, or right and wrong. Every character has dirt on their hands and under their fingernails. By the end I think it'll all come down to choices made and living with them.

And I won't count anyone out yet, either. Sutter has a gift for dropping new twists that I sometimes don't see coming. I'm really interested to see where he's going with Tara. Same goes with Gemma and Jax. I have this truly weird vibe that all is not what is seems with Jax and I hope I'm right. The whole deal with Pope and being all cozy with him doesn't feel quite and I keep going back to the fact Jax is damned good at playing a long con…remember when he completely drew Stahl into his web? Yeah, I'm crossing my fingers he's doing the same with Pope…because the dude is responsible for Opie's death and little things Jax has been saying have me almost convinced, Pope is done for…even if it's by proxy. :D

And geez…so much more I'd love to dive into, but I think I'll hold off until next week to see how everything goes down and we find out who is left standing.

Let me skip Wednesday for a moment and hit Friday…

Fringe:

Guys, I'm so sad this show is ending…but wow, I love how it's going out. Dark!Peter is kind of fascinating to watch. And the softer, gentler Olivia is what I'd hoped for her character. In a weird way it's almost like Peter and Olivia switched places. He's being more focused and analytical and she's going more on instinct. Does that make sense? Eh, who cares. I just love everything about the show right now.

Haven:

I honestly love this show. Had a few bumpy moments where I kinda held my breath to see what direction things would go in, but I like the conflicts and the twisty twists (Dwight! Huge guard tattoo! I wanna know what that means) and the kind of messy, all over the place alliances everyone has. The jury is still out on the bolt gun killer arc…I have a working theory about how it all plays into the larger scheme of things in Haven, but I'm slightly disappointed the new guy turned out to be the culprit. I'll hold off on full blown pissed off until I see what happens. LOL

Now that I have those shows out of the way, let me backtrack to Wednesday and my new favorite show…the one that's been eating my brain lately…

Arrow

This one hits all my hot zones. Writing, casting, characterizations, acting, music, plot, actors, and of course, the abs…basically, the whole enchilada. I love how Steven Amell is playing Ollie. He's got this thing where he looks like he's always holding back and not quite comfortable in his own skin…and that's spot on, IMO. He's not quite at ease in his dual roles of being the billionaire crowned prince and the hooded vigilante yet. Unlike the Green Arrow I met in Smallville (played by the wonderful Justin Hartley), this one is fresh off the island. Getting to see him struggle to adjust and find his footing is kind of compelling to me. I like that he's conflicted and wants to focus on the mission, but totally gets he can't (for the most part…especially when it's pointed out to him…but more on that later).

I'm really enjoying the way Ollie's time on the island is interwoven into present day events. There's seems to be so much they can mine from that five years…because he wasn't alone…at least not all the time. Depending on which version of comics is followed (if any specific ones are) there's an interesting twisty twist that could pop up in the future regarding the Triad and Deathstroke (mask dude from episode 2, I think) at the very least. As to everything else, so far, there's not a character I don't like or at least there isn't one I think is wasted on the screen. Here's a brief rundown of my thoughts…

Ollie: Duh…love him.

Laurel: So far, I like. With CW saying there won't be any super powers I'm sort of not sure where they'll go with her alter comic ego, but I don't know if that'll make much difference.

Diggle: Perfect foil and complement to Ollie. I hope he gets buttloads of screentime.

Thea: I like her. So far. She's got potential to devolve into a whiny caricature type of character, but I hope that doesn’t happen.

Tommy: I like him. Like Thea, I'm hoping he gets more depth, but the gala he threw for Laurel went a long way toward giving him some. And with his recent reversal of fortune, all kinds of possibilities open up.

Walter: I have a great fondness for the actor who plays him so I'm predisposed to like the character.

Moira: Eh, so far I enjoy her. She's sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place and I'm trying not to get too attached because I have a creepy feeling she may not be long for the world…but who knows.

Felicity: Oh…she steals every damn scene she's in. Rock on!

Quentin: You know, I have a soft spot for him and his partner, who I sadly haven't paid enough attention to get his name.

The villains are stacking up and getting established with Dead Shot, the Royal Flush Gang, China White and Deathstroke making appearances so far. And with the reveal of who John Barrowman is actually playing last week, I'm totally on board for the duration of however long this show lasts.

And some allies are popping up. Huntress/Helena…yes, more please. And chemistry with Ollie to boot. Again, more please.  So…get ready folks, I think I'll be dusting off the SkyCaps and start posting about Arrow. :D

Let's see, what else? Xmas ep of Doctor Who is just around the corner and after sobbing my guts out over Amy and Rory, I'm still looking forward to it. And Lost Girl should be back soon and a few other shows currently on hiatus. Who knows, maybe I'll start blabbering about more on my trusty LJ.

Bet you can't wait. LOL

Catch everyone on the flip,

Sky

No wonder I'm still following you - the only show on your list that I don't watch is SoA. Never even sampled it - don't have room for more series at this point. The other 2 that I'm still having a lot of fun watching are Once Upon A Time and Vampire Diaries - both so chock-full of pulpy goodness. :)

Hope you're enjoying the fall finales! I'm going to be so sad when Fringe is finished - Joel Wyman just tweeted that they're finishing up the editing on the finale next week. At least I'll have Downton Abbey to hold onto when Fringe ends. Poor Etta! :(

YAY! Glad peeps are still out there. And glad you're one of them. :D

Sons is soooo good. It's the other one that eats my brain but I started watching after the second season premiered so I didn't think I wanted to attempt SkyCaps...too many to catch up on. LOL If you're ever bored and want good writing, acting, etc., I highly recommend.

You know, I'm planning to start Once Upon a Time in the near future. I hear nothing but good things. I'll probably hold off on VPD until the show finishes it's run then mainline the whole series. :D

So far, definitely enjoying the finales. I want to watch Walking Dead again because I missed some details due to the kidlets interrupting, but EEEK! so good! I also need to watch Haven again because I only paid partial attention because I was on the phone with Pi when it was on. LOL

OHH!! Downton. I love that show. I usually watch when it airs in the UK but I told my SIL I'd wait and watch in real time with her. That's coming up very soon.WOO!!

Totally random, but I'm really looking forward to seeing Seth (Lincoln from Fringe) playing a villain on Arrow. So many of my fandom faves are colliding on that show. (BONUS!!)

I'm so behind. I LOVE Arrow - but I'm behind, and I'm really bad with the names LOL Other than Arrow and his bodyguard/sidekick.

The jury is still out on his best friend, and his sister annoys me. LOVE Laurel's Dad though. Oh and Arrow's mom? don't like her, but in a good way, you know? Kinda like I didn't like Tigh's wife LOL.

LOVE Haven - totally behind LOL. Not sure where the Sheriff is going hooking up with the tattoo people.

I may actually try to watch Fringe from the beginning when it finishes. We'll see.

Glad the job is going well for you :D

Hi! Long time, no see! Just wanted to mention that Science Channel is doing a run of all of the Fringe eps over a period of ~6 weeks with little 'Science of Fringe' interludes by John Noble on Tuesdays. It's partway through the second season now, but if you want to rewatch from the beginning, here's an easy way... Hope you're doing well!

Hi! Long time no see indeed.

That would be awesome if I could get the Science channel LOL. We're living in Germany right now and while we get some stuff like ESPN America sadly we don't get the Science channel.

Hope things are going well for you too!

I'm so happy you LOVE Arrow too!! I'm hoping Thea gets a little more to do other than snark. And Tommy could go either way. Depending on what happens with his dad...and I'll stop there until you're completely caught up. :)

Yeah, Quentin is pretty awesome. I love his interactions with Oliver, especially when Ollie tends to be very respectful and polite. It's like Quentin has no idea how to deal with that version. LOL

Moira, yeah. *nods* I totally get what you're saying. I'm really interested in how things play out with her. And again...gonna stop there. LOL

Ohh...I think you'll be intrigued by Nathan's interactions with the Guard (or Guardians...the tattoo people). It's an added layer to the goings on in Haven.

I deffo recommend watching Fringe if you get the chance. Great show!!

LOOLL so much I need to catch up on. I Need more hours in my day /o\ Now we're all getting ramped up for Christmas, I'm finishing up the shopping & starting the wrapping and I haven't even started on cards yet /o\ #fail.

I was watching Fringe before we moved and then sadly lost track of it :(

OMG! Haven!!! I have actually ventured into a live online fandom for this show. It's very small (at least here in LJ) so I feel safe enough.

I too was kind of disappointed that Tommy turned out to be TBK but not entirely surprised. I liked him. I would love to hear your theory though because I have a couple. Actually I have a bunch of theory a couple of which are related to TBK.

I need to catch up on Fringe. I'm enjoying this season more than the last, by a long shot. But the final season aspect makes it hard for me to commit. I wish we'd gotten this season (or something like it) a while ago.

I'll have to give Arrow another try and really watch. A lot of people like it. I've found it a bit clunkily written but maybe that's stylistic. I have no comic book experience so it's all new to me and I enjoy the kind of stories comic adaptations tell.

I'm guessing you haven't seen the Haven episode from Friday yet. (I actually just finished watching it instead of getting to work at a reasonable time. ;)

I did. I stayed up for it though instead of watching this afternoon, which would explain any potential confusion. My theories are based on new developments from Friday.

Also, that's a really great icon.:)

Thanks! It's my favorite icon. (An oldie but goodie. :)

My understanding from the end of the last Haven ep was that Tommy wasn't TBK, he was killed by TBK soon after his arrival in Haven and skinned, then TBK wore Tommy's skin to confuse everyone. So we've definitely seen TBK, but not necessarily in his natural skin. I am starting to get a little confused about what's going on with all of the plot lines this season, though I did love how basically the Colorado Kid's parents are Audrey and Nathan (even though Nathan figured that out and didn't tell Audrey. Bad Nathan!)</p>

Did you get something else from that episode that I missed?

You understood what I did from the end of the last episode. My theories are about the missing body and the body parts.

Nathan being the Colorado Kid's father is a good twist. Although I don't ship Audrey and Nathan particularly it was a very well executed time travel episode and creates an interesting connection between them. :)

Hi!! Okay, really need to watch the end of last week's episode because I missed important stuff. My loose theory at the moment is Tommy is similar to Audrey and they may be pawns on a larger canvas, possibly controlled by Audrey's former FBI boss (since he made an appearance as her CO when she was Sarah...). I gotta watch the end to see if the other ideas bouncing in my head take shape. LOL

Can't wait to hear your theories. Give me a day or two to watch the ep. :)

I really liked the last season of Fringe with the split 'verses. But...in hindsight it feels like a lot of wasted potential since the show ended up getting the cancellation news. Glad it's back on track and really moving along, but yeah, the final season makes that kind of bittersweet.

I hope you do give Arrow another try. I think the writing is actually kind of strong, but the scope is big, so yeah, stylistically it's a challenge. I think some of clunky aspect from the early episodes is purposefully jarring to sort of underscore the adjustment Ollie is trying to make. :) That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :P

Thanks for commenting...I've missed talking TV and fandom. :D

I like the idea that the Bolt Gun killer is more of a pawn. I hadn't really thought of that but I have been.

Yay Castle and Arrow! Enjoying both :) Glad to see I'm not alone in my Arrow love. I'm also watching Revolution still, although the acting really sucks and Once upon a Time.
